Book project "Warehousing 4.0"

Technical solutions and management concepts for the warehouse logistics of the future

International competition combined with a high cost pressure is increasingly forcing companies to make internal logistics processes more efficient. Warehouse logistics is a key function here, as it determines delivery times and service levels and thus influences the efficiency of the entire supply chain. Although many innovative technical solutions and management concepts already exist today that contribute to a sustainable improvement in warehouse logistics, their potential has not yet been exploited in many companies.

The book published by Prof. Glock and Dr. Grosse presents a selection of promising concepts and solutions for the warehouse logistics of the future – Warehousing 4.0. Warehousing 4.0 is deliberately interpreted very broadly. In addition to the developments of Industry 4.0 and their impact on the automation of warehouse logistics, technical assistance systems and ergonomics will be used to discuss sustainable improvement options for the still widespread manual warehouse logistics. However, we are not experiencing the elimination of manual work in the warehouse as a result of Warehousing 4.0 – rather, the work of employees is being upgraded or supported and ultimately relieved. Driverless transport systems that autonomously transport entire racks to employees, service robots, or even technical assistance systems such as data glasses or exoskeletons are just a few examples of the possibilities that Warehousing 4.0 opens up for companies.

This book first gives an overview of the developments of Industry 4.0 and shows potentials that result from it for warehouse logistics. Innovative technical solutions for automation and digitalization in warehouse logistics are then presented. It additionally shows how people in warehouse logistics can be supported by new management concepts and assistance systems. To conclude, best practice examples highlight the possible implementation of the presented approaches.

The book thus supports in particular practitioners in getting to know the potentials of Warehousing 4.0 in the best possible way and in implementing them.
