AIF project "smart lighting systems"

Potential benefits of smart lighting systems for warehouse management using order picking as an example

Research project at the PSCM Institute funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) successfully completed

Prof. Dr. Christoph Glock and Dr. Eric Grosse from the PSCM Institute, in collaboration with the Institute of Deutsche Post for Optimization of Distribution Networks at RWTH Aachen University under the direction of Prof. Dr. Michael Schneider, have successfully completed a research project as part of an IGF project of the Forschungsgemeinschaft Intralogistik/Fördertechnik und Logistiksysteme e.V. (Research Association for Intralogistics/Conveyor Technology and Logistics Systems). As a result, the cost-benefit effects of smart lighting systems and the requirements for economic operation were investigated. The research project was executed from June 2017 until October 2019.

Project description

The objective of the research project was to investigate the potential benefits of smart lighting systems in warehouses. Smart lighting systems are able to illuminate aisles of the warehouse depending on motion or occupancy, so that the lighting intensity and the energy consumption can be adapted accordingly. Since the intensity of use of the warehouse aisles in turn depends on the control of the warehouse by the company and can thus be actively influenced, numerous interactions arise between the operational strategies for the warehouse and the potential benefits of smart lighting systems. These interactions are investigated in this research project, in particular through the development of integrated mathematical optimization models for order picking as well as through the development of a simulation model. The topic has been worked on in close cooperation with the project-accompanying committee.
