Warehouse excursion to the online supermarket Picnic

2024/02/01

On January 30, 2024, a group of students of our Master's courses and staff members of the Institute of Production and Supply Chain Management visited the Fulfillment Center of the online supermarket Picnic in Viernheim. The group followed an invitation by former institute member Dr. Konstantin Biel, who joined Picnic in 2018 working as an analyst and as a corporate expansion planner since 2022.

Picnic was founded in the Netherlands in 2015 and has been tapping into the German market since 2018. As an online supermarket, Picnic allows its customers to shop via app on their smartphones, with orders being delivered the following day. Picnic's assortment includes nearly 10,000 products including fresh, refrigerated, and frozen goods. To implement their concept, Picnic maintains a specialized and complex supply chain.

During the excursion, the logistics processes in the fulfilment center and the supply chain were explained to the participants. During a guided tour through the picking area, participants were able to closely observe picking and order processing at Picnic. As a further highlight, an analyst gave insights into his work, illustrating how concepts and methods taught at the Institute of Production and Supply Chain Management can be transferred into practice. The excursion was an excellent addition to the Institute’s courses and was very well received by the participating students.

The Institute of Production and Supply Chain Management would like to thank Picnic, its staff and especially Dr. Konstantin Biel for this excellently organized and exciting excursion!
